Where It All Began
Cathy’s Fancy, Caribbean.
The first one.
After graduating college, Gregory flew to the Caribbean with the minimum possible funds. He slept under catamarans on empty beaches. He had no plan beyond movement and a sketchbook.
One afternoon, sketching under a palm tree, an older man stopped and asked to see the book. He looked through it slowly. He liked what he saw. He offered Gregory a room at his small, simple beach hotel — Cathy’s Fancy — in exchange for artwork. Gregory said yes.
That was the first artist in residence. No application, no brief, no institutional framework. Just a sketchbook, a stranger’s eye, and a handshake deal on a Caribbean beach. More than forty residencies across six continents followed — from the Great Wall to the Maldives, from Tokyo to the flanks of a Balinese volcano — but the logic has never changed: show up, look carefully, make something true to the place.
