The Process

How a commission works —
from first conversation to finished painting.

1

Tell me about the space and what it means to you

Start by filling in the inquiry form below. Tell me where the painting will live, roughly how large a painting you would like as well as the size of the wall. Is there anything about what you’d want it to feel like — calm, energetic, contemplative. There are no wrong answers. The more you share, the better the painting will be.

2

A conversation — in person, by phone, or by email

I reply to every inquiry personally, usually within 48 hours. We’ll talk about your vision, look at examples from my work that might resonate, and establish the scope, size, and timeline. If we’re a good match, we move forward with a simple agreement and a 50% deposit to hold your place in the schedule.

3

I paint — and keep you in the loop

I work in oil or acrylic and mixed media on canvas or paper. Depending on size and complexity, most commissions take between 4 and 8 weeks. I share progress photographs at key stages so you can see the work evolving. Your input at these moments shapes the final piece.

4

Delivery and installation

Once the painting is complete and you’ve approved it, the remaining 50% is due. The work is then professionally photographed, packed (usually rolled in a sturdy tube), and shipped — or delivered in person when possible. I’m happy to assist with suggestions on installation and can provide a signed certificate of authenticity and provenance documentation. We both keep track of the artwork while it is in transit to you to make sure it arrives safely and undamaged. I have been working this way for over twenty years and have never lost or had a painting damaged in transit.

Common Questions

What people usually ask
before confirming a commission.

What does a commissioned painting cost?

Pricing depends on size, complexity, and timeline. Small works begin around $2,000. Large-scale canvas commissions for corporate or institutional spaces typically range from $10,000 to $50,000+. I'm happy to discuss a range that works for your project — there's no obligation in asking.

How long does it take?

Most commissions are completed within 4 to 8 weeks from the point we agree on scope and you place your 50% deposit. If you have a specific deadline — an anniversary, an opening, a move-in date — tell me early and I’ll let you know if it’s achievable.

Can I choose the subject or colors?

Absolutely. Many clients bring reference images, color swatches, or simply a feeling they want the painting to evoke. I work with you to understand what you're after, then bring my own interpretation to it — that collaboration between your vision and my artistic voice is what makes each commission unique.

What if I don't love the final painting?

This rarely happens when the conversation at the start is thorough — which is why I invest time in understanding your vision before I begin. Progress photographs give you visibility at key stages, and your feedback shapes the direction. The final balance is due only when you're satisfied with the completed work.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. I have shipped commissioned works to clients across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Depending on the artwork, either I roll and package it myself in a sturdy tube or I engage a professional agent to crate it. Shipping artwork rolled in a tube is substantially easier and less expensive than crating and shipping stretched or framed artwork but I can do both. I use professional international couriers and insure the work for transit. Shipping costs are quoted at the time of your commission agreement.

Can a commission be given as a gift?

It's one of the most meaningful gifts imaginable. I work with the gift-giver confidentially and can time delivery for a birthday, anniversary, or other occasion. Gift certificates for a commission consultation are also available.
